Even if you just got your guitar yesterday . . . you can learn Black Dog today!
Do you want to be able to play killer guitar riffs and hooks . . . sooner, or much later?
If you work on Black Dog like you have been working on other songs, riffs, etc., it's
going to take you a LONG time to get it down! Or, you can nail it within a FEW DAYS!
Play it today! Have fun! Have it NAILED within a few days!
If you just want to be able to play Black Dog, there's a link below to a SHORT
workshop that will get you there, fast! Read on for a workshop overview!
Part One of the workshop . . .
It breaks the hook down into 3 easily managed short riffs. There's a backing track that starts
slow! You play it until you can play that part reasonably well. Move on to the next track. That
one starts slow, and increases slightly each time you play it. You work on that track until you
can play it all the way through. It finishes at just a little faster than the actual song.
You also work on the other 2 parts. There's also another backing track that plays all 3 sections
of the hook together. Slow at first, and increasing in tempo each iteration! When you get through
this track, you will be able to play the whole hook, faster than recorded!
Each time you work on it, each session, you'll get farther into the tracks. Within a SHORT TIME,
you'll be able to play the whole hook, faster than the record!
This is just ONE of the workshops on my I Just Wanna Play The Darn Thing site!
Here's a sample of the workshop, but without the "lesson" part. Sorry for the gaps, but this
page is just to fill you in! If you like what's below, you'll LOVE the workshop!
OK, here's the riff, all 3 sections. The TAB looks like this . . .
Don't worry if you can't read TAB yet. It's explained in the worksop!
The whole hook sounds like this . . .

So, now we take the 1st section. Learn it. Then do the drills!
Two suggested ways to finger this riff. First, this whole riff is simply
and extended Am Pentatonic scale. I suggest using the proper fingering
you would use to play the Am Pentatonic scale. IE: One finger per fret.
1st finger will play fret 5. 2nd finger, fret 6. 3rd finger, fret 7. So,
the 1st option below is how I personally play it. (I roll my 3rd finger
to go from string 4 to string 5 on the 7th fret.)
I prefer this way because there is less motion just rolling your finger to
the next lower string. Option 2 requires shifting to get your 2nd finger to
play the 7th fret. Then shifting back so finger 1 can play the 3rd string,
5th fret. But whatever works for you!
That being said, if you want to more aggressively strike the note on the 5th
string, you can more easily "hammer" the note using finger 2. So, there's that!
The 2nd option, probably used by many, is to us your 2nd finger to play the 5th
string, 7th fret. See both below. Try'm, see what works better for you.
Fingers are red in the TAB below.
Learn it! Play it until you're comfortable playing the riff.
Drill it! Even if you don't play it now, listen to this all the way to the
end! It's the magic behind the workshops! It's only a bit over a minute!
~
In the workshop, we do each section like this. Plus one backing track
drill with all 3 sections together. IE: The entire hook! The recording
is about 170BPM. The drills go up to 180BPM. So once you nail the
drills, playing it at 170BPM will be a SNAP!
OK, I'll show you one more part of the Part 1 workshop. You might not
be able to do this part yet. If you can read the TAB, and have been
playing a while, you can work your way through it. Keep in mind, there's
more to the workshop than just showing you a TAB and giving you a backing
track to play over! When you get to this point in the workshop, you'll fully
understand it! But if you want to dabble . . . here's the full riff!
This track plays the full hook, starting "a bit" slow, at 105BPM. And ends
up at 180BPM. It's a good warm up once you get the three sections down!
And this is the Grand Finale! Full hook plays 8 times at 175BPM, then 8 times at
a sluggish 170BPM! Same as the record!
Now you can work on it with the MIDI backing track you just downloaded off the
Rockin' MIDI page! But WAIT!
There's more to the song than jut that ONE HOOK! Want to learn it ALL!?!
Parts 2 and 3 of the Black Dog Workshop covers the rest!
There ya have it! Want more? Go to the tutorial! Bookmark it! You
can download the tabs and backing tracks so you can practice offline!
