Elvis Presley (1968)
W&M by W. Earl Brown
From Wikipedia: Steve Binder, who produced Presley’s 1968 television comeback special, recalled that he and Presley had discussed Elvis’ dismay over the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. Binder was struck by the conversation and ordered W. Earl Brown, a songwriter working on the show, to come up with a song incorporating Presley’s concern to use as the finale to the show. He wrote "If I Can Dream", and when Presley heard it he proclaimed "I'm never going to sing another song I don't believe in. I'm never going to make another picture I don't believe in."

"In a Broken Dream" is a song and single by Australian rock band Python Lee Jackson featuring vocals from Rod Stewart. Released in 1972 it entered the UK chart in September, reaching number 3 in October. Stewart's vocals are not credited on the record label, although the popularity of the song can be attributed to his vocals and star profile. Stewart re-recorded the song in 1992 with David Gilmour and John Paul Jones but did not release it. The recording was eventually released in 2009 as part of the The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998.

Gene Pitney (1964)
W&M by Howard Greenfield and Helen Miller
From wikipedia: "It Hurts to Be in Love" was originally intended to be sung by Pitney's childhood friend and sometime collaborator Neil Sedaka, but Sedaka's employers at RCA Victor refused to release Sedaka's new recording, because he had not recorded it in their studios, as stipulated by his contract. Sedaka attempted another recording of this song in RCA's studios, but the results were unsatisfactory. Howard Greenfield and Helen Miller, the song's co-writers, offered it to Gene Pitney instead, and he took the existing musical track, replacing Sedaka's lead vocal track with Pitney's own. Everything else was Sedaka's, including his own arrangement and backing vocals, piano-playing, and usual female backup singers.

According to machine411: The song...refers to an acid trip. Kenny Rogers' version is said to have been Jimi Hendrix's favourite song at the time.

Okie comments: I used to perform this song in my show. I loved it because most people remembered "Hey Little Girl In The High School Sweater" while this song got less acclaim in the states. Besides I had a girl friend at the time that deserved to hear me sing these particular lyrics to her.

Billy Joel (1977)
W&M by Billy Joel (1977)
"Just the Way You Are" is a song by Billy Joel and the third track from his 1977 album The Stranger. It was Joel's first US Top 10 (reaching #3) and UK Top 20 single, as well as Joel's first gold single in the US. "Just the Way You Are", which won the 1979 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, turned Joel's chart career, which had largely stalled out by early 1975, into long-lasting success. The song also coincidentally tied another of his #3 hits, his last US Top 10 single, "The River of Dreams", for most weeks on the Hot 100 of any of his singles, at 27.

W&M by Billy Joel (1977)
In an interview on the Howard Stern Radio Show on November, 16th, 2010, Joel revealed that the inspiration for writing this tune (more specifically the name of the song and how it sounds in the chorus) was directly taken from the last line in the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons song "Rag Doll;" which incidentally was also a larger inspiration for Joel's later song, "Uptown Girl".

History of the song, according to wikipedia: "We had a disagreement, and rather than put my fist through the wall or get crazy or get nuclear, I went out to the piano, and this song just kind of poured out. We wound up getting married shortly thereafter, and the lead sheet of that song was the announcement for the wedding, with our picture embossed on it."
